Postdoctoral position – not available anymore –
in climate extremes and socio-political systems at University of Potsdam (Institute of Physics)
The Complexity Science research group at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a postdoctoral position for 2+1 years. Preferred starting date is 1 February 2024. Please, send in your application by 12 November 2023. The position is open until it has been filled.
We seek a candidate interested in one or both of the following areas:
Water extremes – Water extremes such as floods and droughts caused three quarters of all natural disasters in the 21st century, with dramatic impacts on societies. We are looking for a candidate interested in advancing Machine Learning approaches to identify signatures and drivers of extreme events in climate and society.
Economic inequality and political dynamics – The last decade has shown an alarming decline in democracy across the western world, including some of the most consolidated democracies. We are looking for a candidate interested in advancing analysis and modelling of large-scale economics and political science data with the aim of shedding light on the interactions and causal relations between political and economic indicators.
We seek candidates with a strong background in one or more of the following areas: physics / statistics / machine learning / complex systems.
In both projects we combine mathematical tools (information theory, statistical mechanics, mathematical modelling) with expertise from the relevant application areas, supported through collaborations with hydrologists, and social and political scientists.
We value diversity and are committed to equal opportunities. Women and underrepresented minorities in science are particularly encouraged to apply. We also encourage applications from individuals with different backgrounds and experiences.
The position is initially for 2 years, with potential for extension by 1 year. The successful candidate will work 40 hours per week (100 %). The position is classified within remuneration group 13 of the collective wage agreement among the German states (TV-L). The fixed term of employment is in accordance with Section 2 subsection 1 of the German Act on Limited Scientific Contracts (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz or WissZeitVG). An extension of one year is possible if scientific, personal and legal requirements are met.
The University of Potsdam (UP) was founded in 1991 and has established itself as a top-twenty-five Young University in the world and the number one Young University in Germany (2023 Times Higher Education ranking of universities less than 50 years old). UP sits within a thriving research environment in the Potsdam area, which has the largest number of research institutions per inhabitant of all German cities.
Please, send your CV and a two-page research statement by 12 November 2023 to [email protected] and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be emailed to the same address directly by your referees.
